Our Coach– Bunny Warren

Ian "Bunny" Warren has worked with Amanda and Sarah since 2006. He helped the team qualify for and compete at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Bunny grew up in the United Kingdom sailing dinghies– including the Laser, 420, 470 and Fireballs. He was quite successful in his sailing, winning many regattas and National and European titles. Outside of weekend sailing Bunny also sailed two Olympic campaigns in the 470. In 1989, Bunny moved on to asymmetric classes including the Int. 14s and 18s. He won the National Championships and European Championships in both, including the prestigious ‘Prince of Wales Cup’ in the Int. 14.

Bunny has been coaching Olympic classes since 1996. He started his tradition of working with US Sailors when he helped 470 sailors JJ Isler and Pease Glaser (Olympic Silver Medallists) to prepare for the Olympics in 2000. In 2004, He coached the Australian 49er Team at the Athens Pre-Olympics and Athens Olympic Games.

Beyond coaching Olympic class sailing, Bunny is a qualified designer and boat builder. In 1983, he set up ST Foils to specializing in custom rudders and centerboards for all racing sailboats.

Countdown To London 2012!

Amanda Clark was born in 1982 and grew up on Shelter Island, NY. She started sailing at the Shelter Island Yacht Club at age 5 sailing in the Optimist Dinghy and joined the junior program at age 7. When she aged out of the Optimist class at age 15 Amanda immediately started racing in Olympic Class sailboats. With the help of her community and the Shelter Island Y.C. Amanda and her family began to raise the funds necessary to help her compete on the Olympic level.

She chose to start her Olympic quest for 2000 in the single handed event, the Europe Dinghy. Amanda immediately made her mark in history by becoming the youngest female to qualify for the US Sailing Team at age 15. She learned valuable skills during this first Olympic Campaign and finished a respectable 3rd place at the Olympic Trials. Still excited to learn more and to achieve her first goal of being an Olympian Amanda set out on her next Olympic Campaign, this time in the two person boat, the International 470. In 2002 Amanda join forces with friend and standout athlete, Sarah Mergenthaler. Together, they finished 2nd at the 2004 Olympic Trials, just barely missing out on the spot for the Olympic Team.

Amanda seized the opportunity after the 2004 campaign to finish her studies at Connecticut College. During her time at Conn. College Amanda also competed in college sailing, earning All American status. She graduated class ‘05 with a degree in Studio Art. Amanda was now truly ready to focus on her passion for sailing. Together with Sarah, Amanda went on to lead the rankings in the 470 class from 2005-2008. They brought their world ranking from 47th in 2005 to 5th in 2007. Primed for the 2007 Olympic Trials with 10 years of Olympic campaign under her belt, Amanda and Sarah went on to win the Olympic Trials with a race to spare, qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Team to compete in China.

Amanda is married and lives on Shelter Island. Her husband Greg Nissen runs a camp and retreat center on the island.

Sarah was born in 1979 in Red Bank, New Jersey. Introduced to the sport by her father, she began sailing at age 7, progressed to racing Optimists by age 9 and then Lasers at age 15. In addition to 470's, Sarah also crews on Lightnings. Sarah attended Marlboro H. S., Marlboro, NJ. Here, she competed on the varsity cross-country, basketball, track and soccer teams, garnering all-district, all-conference and all-state recognition.

In the fall of '97, Sarah started attending the University of Richmond. At the U. of Richmond, Sarah was a scholarship athlete for the nationally-ranked soccer team and threw the javelin for the track team. She was two-time conference champion in the javelin throw. In the Spring of 2000, Sarah was awarded the Fannie Crenshaw Scholarship for excellence in the classroom and in athletics. Sarah graduated from the U. of Richmond in '01 with a double major in Business Administration and Sport Management. Upon graduating she took a position with a money management firm.

In '02 Sarah joined Amanda Clark in the International 470 to pursue her dream of becoming an Olympic Athlete. Together with Clark, she has competed in numerous International regattas, focused on gaining the skills needed to clinch the Olympic berth. In '04, Sarah and Amanda fell short by a mere 3 points to miss qualifying for the team. The fire renewed, Sarah helped lead the charge for the 2008 campaign. From '05 - '07 Amanda and Sarah dominated the US 470 scene. The team achieved a ranking of first for 3 years running on the US Sailing team, winning all major qualifiers. In October of '07 Sarah and Clark won the US Olympic Trials. This accomplishment completes the first step for the team to reach their shared goal: to win an Olympic Gold Medal.

Sarah, who formerly went by the last name of Mergenthaler, is married to Brian Chin. They currently live in New Jersey with their Bernese Mountain dog- Tug.
